An American College, in Japan
Our program is primarily geared to providing students with a two-year Associate of Arts Degree. In the American education system, the first two years at a university is generally when students obtain a broad Liberals Arts education. In their second two years they focus on their majors. In order to keep our size small and reactive to student needs, we have decided to only offer an AA degree.
Like thousands of community colleges across the United States, LCJ prepares students to continue their B.A. degrees at other universities or colleges by providing them with the first two years of their university requirements. Some students choose to end their academic careers with an A.A. degree in order to pursue work opportunities, to start families or to pursue other goals.
General Education
From beginning Writing to a variety of elective courses, LCJ provides the full breadth of academic discovery inherent to the General Education concept. Writing, Art, Science, Speaking, History, Social Studies, Religion, and Interdisciplinary courses give you the foundation required to move forward with a deeper study in the field of your choice. Free to explore a variety of disciplines, you will at least acquire a better sense of how the world at large factors in to your specific area of study; at most, you may discover a completely new area you never knew existed, but wish to delve into.

Getting Ready
Not everybody is ready for American college classes from the start. Students must often read dozens of pages a week from difficult texts, and are required to not only understand, but to analyze the information and synthsize new ideas from it. They are expected to write long essays incorporating research and original thought, citing work carefully and avoiding logical fallacies. They must understand how to prepare for lessons, taking pre-class reading notes and preparing questions to ask in class. They must be able to understand lecturing by native speakers, and be able to take effective notes on the important elements of the subject matter. If a student is not a native English speaker, pre-academic classes are needed to make sure that when they enter the academic program, they are ready to go.
